Service Requests
As you come across potholes, contact us with a good description of where they are -- nearest address, distance from intersection, what side of the road, etc. We can always use another set of “eyes” out there!

Winter Preparedness
We are gearing up for winter. Our winter sand pile is nearly as tall as as our salt barn. Sander boxes, spreaders and blades are being installed as our trucks change gears from summer to winter operations.
There is still time to check your furnace and its filters, smoke detectors, chimneys and mailboxes. The often-overlooked mailbox needs to be checked, too. Click here for a quick overview on mailbox winter survival tips - a few minutes of inspection and repair could save hours of outdoor repairs and lost/damaged mail.
Snowfall summary is as follows:
November 2011 2.5"
December 2011 2.75"
January 2012 48.50" for a season total of 53.75"
Check the snowfall detail amounts here.

The "W's" of Weight Restrictions
What
When weight restrictions are being enforced, most heavy trucks must reduce their speeds and axle loads. These reductions reduce the impact that vehicles have on the fragile road surface. Speeds are reduced 35 MPH. Loads can either be reduced by carrying fewer pounds or by adding additional axles.
Why
The State of Michigan allows more weight per axle during normal travel times than any of the adjoining states. Weight restrictions are placed on roads to protect them from damage as the frost comes out of the road bed surface. As this action is weather-related, there is no set day when restrictions are placed or removed. Following is a brief history of "on-and-off" dates in Grand Traverse County:
When
Year "ON" "OFF"
2011 March 1 April 13
2010 March 10 March 24
2009 March 9 April 17
2008 March 14 April 14
2007 March 5 April 2
2006 March 8 April 3
2005 March 14 April 7
2004 March 1 April 19
Where
All state highways within Grand Traverse County are considered "Class A" roads. Trucks may continue their loads and speeds. A list of roads within Grand Traverse County that have either been constructed or reconstructed to a greater standard are also exempt. No special moves are allowed for loads that are overweight or oversized during this period of time.
Who
There are legal exemptions for certain classes of business; however, those businesses must still obtain written permission from the Road Commission for their intended route. Examples are several types of farm transports and electric utilities.
