BIA/GT Band
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Grand Traverse Band (GTB) have been partners with the Road Commission since the late 1990's. One of their first cooperative efforts was to offers funds to cost-share in the aerial photography of the then-proposed Hartman-Hammond Connector. Although the project did not go forward, it set the stage for more present day efforts.
The GTB evaluated our road system and then determined which roads qualified to become included in their "Tribal Road System." Roads which met their criteria then became eligible for federal tribal and local 2% funds.
The Grand Traverse Band is providing over $800,000 from their Stimulus Funds for two projects. The projects they selected are rehabilitation (crushing and shaping) and shoulder paving of East Silver Lake Road from Zimmerman to Rennie School Road and the overlay of Keystone Road from Cass Road to River Road. The Engineer’s Estimates are $681,000 and $131,000 respectively. This work will be done in the 2010 construction season.
The engineering design of the East Silver Lake and River Road BIA-ARRA projects will be done by Gosling Czubak in the amounts of $4,775 and $3,600 respectively, totaling $8,375.Presently, the realignment of Bates Road in Williamsburg is under consideration.
